Alberto Reyes is Appointed Member of the Legal Committee of the French-Dominican Chamber of Commerce

Alberto Reyes Báez, partner of Guzmán Ariza, was appointed permanent member of the Legal and Security Commission of the French-Dominican Chamber of Commerce and Industry (CCIFD).

The CCIFD legal committee, created in May 2017, is a permanent consultative body for the support of its members, the French and Dominican legal culture, as well as spokespersons for issues related to legal aspects of local, international, immigration and institutional trade.

Alberto Reyes has more than 13 years of experience and a postgraduate degree at the University of Paris, Panthéon – Assas.

Dominican Republic Law Firm Guzmán Ariza is Celebrating its 90th Anniversary

The Dominican Republic law firm of Guzmán Ariza – the first and only national law firm in the Dominican Republic – is celebrating its 90th anniversary this year. Since 1927, Guzmán Ariza has focused on serving national and international businesses and individuals.

Fabio Guzmán Ariza, the firm’s managing partner, explained that the firm was started by his father, Antonio Guzmán, working solo in his home town of Salcedo, after graduating from the University of Santo Domingo Law School.

Now, Mr. Guzmán Ariza continued, the firm has seven fully-staffed offices strategically located in every major business and tourism center in the Dominican Republic and is “the only law firm in the Dominican Republic with a national reach.”

Developing Countries Allowed to Import Generic Drugs

An amendment to the agreement on intellectual property entered into force securing for developing countries a legal pathway to access affordable medicines under World Trade Organization (WTO) rules.

The amendment to the Trade Related Aspects of Intellectual Property (TRIPS) agreement provides a secure and sustained legal basis for both potential exporters and importers to adopt legislation and establish the means needed to allow countries with limited or no production capacity to import affordable generics from countries where pharmaceuticals are patented.

The TRIPS amendment gives the world’s most vulnerable people access to drugs for diseases such as HIV/AIDS, tuberculosis and malaria.

Fabio Guzmán-Ariza joins the International Association of Managing Partners

The Managing Partner of Guzmán Ariza, Fabio J. Guzmán-Ariza, was invited to join the International Association of Managing Partners (IAMP), as a founding member of its Dominican chapter.

The IAMP is a global association for the Managing Partners of local, national and international law firms. Founded in London in 2004, it has grown to a worldwide membership of more than 350 individuals, ranging from sole practitioners to the leaders of some of the world’s largest law firms.

The association has chapters in more than 70 countries and now is launching its chapter in the Dominican Republic.

Mr. Guzmán-Ariza has been the managing partner of Guzmán Ariza since 1985 and has served as counsel to local and international corporations and individuals on Dominican legal issues for more than 35 years.

Partner of Guzmán Ariza Julio Brea-Guzmán Was Appointed Member of the Board of the Chamber of Commerce of Puerto Plata

The Chamber of Commerce of Puerto Plata appointed Julio Brea-Guzmán, partner at the law firm Guzmán Ariza, as a member of the Board which will be governed by the period 2016-2018.

In commenting to his appointment, Julio Brea-Guzmán noted that the constructive joint efforts of the members of the Chamber will continue to successfully improve and redevelop the region.

The new board members were announced last October during the Annual General Assembly of the chamber. These were elected by the members of the Council and approved by the shareholders who attended the ceremony.

Guzmán Ariza Hires Two New Associates

Guzmán Ariza is pleased to announce the addition of two new associates to the firm: Lidio Duval and William Lora. They join a team of more than 40 legal and accounting professionals working from seven offices across the Dominican Republic.

“We are very excited to welcome Lidio and William to our team,” said Fabio J. Guzmán Ariza, Managing Partner of Guzmán Ariza. “They were both outstanding students in law school and we expect them to show the same dedication to our clients and the practice of law.”

Mr. Duval graduated summa cum laude, at the top of his class, from the UNIBE law school in Santo Domingo, and will be based in the Santo Domingo office of the firm. Mr. Lora is a summa cum laude graduate of UTESA law school in Puerto Plata, where he also headed his law class. He will be working from the Sosúa office of the firm.

Pre-clearance Coming to Punta Cana International Airport

Punta Cana could soon become the first Dominican airport to offer pre-clearance facilities for entering the United States. This means that passengers flying out through PUJ would clear US immigration and customs in the Dominican Republic, allowing for an expedited entry into the United States. The facility at the present time is offered in 15 international airports around the world.

Successful Customs and Border Patrol (CBP) preclearance programs are in place in Dublin and Shannon (Ireland); Aruba; Freeport and Nassau in The Bahamas; Bermuda; Calgary, Toronto, Edmonton, Halifax, Montreal, Ottawa, Vancouver, and Winnipeg in Canada; and Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates.

Guzmán Ariza Invested as Member of the Spanish Royal Academy

Fabio J. Guzmán Ariza was recognized as a corresponding member of the Spanish Royal Academy (Real Academia Española), the  premier authority in the world on Spanish language usage, at a ceremony held in Santo Domingo at the Dominican Academy of Letters (Academia Dominicana de la Lengua).

Bruno Rosario Candelier, executive director of the Dominican Academy of Letters praised Mr. Guzmán’s for his many publications on Spanish language issues and for his commitment to improving the quality of  legal drafting in Dominican official documents.
