Mexican Investors Show Confidence in the Dominican Republic

The Mexican investors in the Hard Rock Hotel & Casino in Punta Cana have announced plans to build a 40-story, 400-room high rise hotel, the Hard Rock Hotel & Casino Santo Domingo on Av. Abraham Lincoln and Calle José Andrés Aybar in the Polígono Central, an attractive location for shopping, restaurants, night life and city offices. In partnership with All Inclusive Collection, the full-service hotel, scheduled for opening in late 2017, will have 400 hotel rooms and suites and a state-of-the-art casino.

The construction of what will be the tallest building in Santo Domingo is due to begin before April 2016, the investors told President Danilo Medina after a meeting at the Presidential Palace.

“The Dominican Republic is the region’s most visited country and continues to be the top performing destination in the Caribbean. In fact, the country received 19% of the record number of 26.3 million visitors to the Caribbean region in 2014,” said Nelson Parker, vice president of casino development, Hard Rock International in a Hard Rock International press release. “The decision to bring a full-service hotel and the brand’s second Caribbean casino to the Dominican Republic is a testament to the country’s remarkable strength in tourism.”

Hard Rock is showing its confidence in Santo Domingo. Frank Maduro, vice president of Marketing for All Inclusive Collection states: “We’ve had overwhelming success with our resort in Punta Cana, and are thrilled to continue our collaboration with Hard Rock International and introduce Hard Rock Hotel & Casino Santo Domingo. The vibrant atmosphere of the destination, matched with our luxury offerings and unique amenities, will make for an unforgettable and fun experience for all travelers.”

Travel up 9.7% in August 2015

Non-resident air arrivals to the Dominican Republic are now up 7.9% from January to August 2015, which promises to be a bumper year for tourism in the Dominican Republic. After a record 10.4% in arrivals in July, August turned in another strong month with 9.7%, according to statistics compiled by the Central Bank.

In August 2015, 465,806 non-resident air arrivals were up 41,091 compared to the same month in 2014. The number of non-resident foreign tourists was 396,091, up 8.9%, equal to 32,445 more tourists. The number of Dominican non-resident arrivals was 69,175, up 14.2%, or 8,646 more visitors this August compared to last year.

Central Bank analysts concluded that the increase in visitors was due to the improvements in the US economy and strategies implemented by the Ministry of Tourism working closely with the private sector to consolidate the DR’s leading position in tourism in the Caribbean.

From January to August 2015, resident and non-resident arrivals totaled 4,254,119.

5.4 % More Tourists Visit the DR in March

In March 36,624 more tourists visited the Dominican Republic compared to the same month last year, for a total 537,640 non-resident travelers, including 61,120 Dominican expatriates and 476,520 foreign tourists. 95.8 % of visitors said the purpose of their visit was leisure.

Travel in the first quarter of the year (January to March) showed 77,050 more visitors from North America and travel from South America was up by 20.1 %. Travel from Europe showed a decline in the number of Russians for 44,598 for the first quarter compared to the same period in 2014. Excluding the Russians, European travel was up 7.2 % from January to March 2015.

The Central Bank attributes the increase in travelers to more visitors coming from the United States, which is experiencing economic recovery. It says that the tourists are also attracted by the international promotion campaigns carried out by the Ministry of Tourism and the private hotel sector to consolidate the country’s leadership in tourism in the Caribbean.
