NatureBank to Invest Over $11 Million in Sustainable Cocoa Development in the DR

NatureBank Asset Management signed a non-binding MOU agreement with Anholt Services (USA) for the development and ongoing management of cocoa projects in the Dominican Republic through its fully owned German-based subsidiary, ForestFinest Consulting GmbH.

During a one-year period, highly productive projects of growing fine and flavor cocoa will be developed to meet the growing demand for sustainable cocoa in the international marketplace.

This sustainable investment company has focused in the Dominican Republic because of its long embraced sustainable cocoa production, evidenced by being the largest producer of organic cocoa in the world.

The New York Times recently quoted the opinion of Alfredo Guzmán-Saladín, partner at the Guzmán Ariza Law Firm, in an article about the real estate market in the Dominican Republic published in the International Real Estate section on May 11, 2016.

Fundéu to Open in July in the Dominican Republic

The Fundación del Español Urgente (Fundéu) will open in July in the Dominican Republic after reaching an agreement with the Guzmán Ariza Foundation Pro Dominican Academy of Letters signed in Madrid. “Fundéu GA” aims to promote the correct use of the Spanish language in Dominican media.

Fabio Guzman Ariza, president of the Guzmán Ariza Foundation Pro Dominican Academy of Letters and managing partner of the Guzmán Ariza law firm,  told EFE that the agreement was “a dream come true”. The foundation has already helped the Dominican Academy of Letters in ventures like the publication of the Diccionario del español dominicano (2013) and the more recent Diccionario fraseológico del español dominicano (2016), the first on Dominican Spanish and the second on popular Dominican phrases.

New Free Zones to be Established in the DR

The Ministry of Industry and Commerce announced that they had approved permits for 15 new companies that applied to set up operations in the duty free manufacturing zones. They have also signed contracts to develop and open three new free zone parks.

These new companies will invest around RD$1.35 billion and create 1,766 direct jobs with an income of around US$21.7 million. The development and operation of the three new free zones parks is estimated to involve an investment of RD$1.74 billion, generate income around US$10.7 million and create 3,200 direct jobs.

Christoph Sieger Chairs the German Chamber of Commerce for Central America and the Caribbean

The German Association of Chambers of Commerce, Tourism and Industry for Central America and the Caribbean (AHK Central America/Caribbean) named Christoph Sieger, partner of our firm and current president of the Dominican AHK, as regional president of the chamber on an event held in Panamá.

The AHK Central America/Caribbean promotes trade and economic relations between Germany and the seven chambers of the region: Honduras, Guatemala, El Salvador, Nicaragua, Dominican Republic, Costa Rica and Panamá.

These seven autonomous and binational chambers include more than 600 member companies.

The AHK Central America/Caribbean supports these seven chambers and develops regional initiatives for Germans to perceive Central America and the Caribbean as an economic and investment region.

Guzmán Ariza at International Living

Guzmán Ariza participated in the international real estate conference IL’s Fast-Track Your Retirement Overseas Event, organized by International Living in Louisiana, United States. More than 200 potential retirees attended the International Living conference looking for the best place where to spend their golden years. Guzmán Ariza was the only law firm representing the Dominican Republic.

César Calderón, partner of the firm, presented a summary of the most important aspects of buying real estate in the Dominican Republic, and of obtaining residency and citizenship in the Dominican Republic.

Guzmán Ariza Launches Book in Puerto Plata

Guzmán Ariza Attorneys at Law presented in Puerto Plata the book Repertorio de la jurisprudencia civil, comercial e inmobiliaria de la República Dominicana (2001-2014), written by managing partner Fabio J. Guzmán Ariza.

The presentation was held at the event hall of the Puerto Plata Chamber of Commerce with the presence of prominent lawyers and judges. Vilma Díaz Colombo, judge at the Land Court in Puerto Plata, and  Carlos Balbuena, a local attorney, spoke at the event.

The compilation of the civil, commercial and real estate case law in the Dominican Republic (2001-2014), condenses and organizes the rulings made by the Supreme Court and the Constitutional Court of the Dominican Republic.

Promoting New Tourism Development in Las Terrenas

According to news reports, foreign investors approved a proposal for the Las Terrenas Development Plan at a meeting with Las Terrenas municipal authorities. As reported by Noticias SIN, Mariana Vanderhorst, temporary Las Terrenas mayor and the project promoter, sent a written request to private companies on 18 February 2016 with a plan to build a golf course in Las Terrenas as part of a major real estate development and the reorganization of the city government and educational community and public infrastructure to adjust it to the tourism area. The plan needs to be approved by the private investors and would then pass through the other institutions, including the city council, and the ministries of Tourism and Environment.

Samana’s development has been adversely affected by the recent cancellation of the JetBlue flight from New York to Samana airport and the high cost of the toll roads linking Santo Domingo to Samaná and Las Terrenas.

DR Chamber of Commerce in Spain

The Dominican Republic Chamber of Commerce in Spain is now up and running. The new chamber, an initiative by the Dominican Embassy in Madrid will strive to unite public and private ventures aimed at strengthening trade between Spain and the Dominican Republic. Ambassador Anibal de Castro says the new chamber will play an active role in promoting trade at the highest levels.

“The Chamber will serve as a communication tool between yourselves and the businesspeople who seek to do business in the country as well as communication bridge with government authorities,” stated De Castro.

The Cremades & Calvo-Sotelo law firm, which helped with the formation of the new chamber, will remain on the board as general secretary.

Founding partner Javier Cremades described the new chamber as a historic event in the trade relations between Spain and the DR. He said it would contribute to the business climate for future generations.
